Daegu Metropolitan City was selected as a local base for the “Open Innovation Digital Open Lab” project. Announced by the Ministry of Science and ICT, the ““Open Innovation Digital Open Lab” project would allow the development and demonstration of innovative devices through the convergence of new ICT technology and different industries.

Through this project, the K-ICT Device Lab located in the Daegu Technopark will be expanded and renovated into the Digital Open Lab, which will be a local base for supporting innovative devices based on data, network (5G), and artificial intelligence.
The Digital Open Lab will provide facilities, equipment, and collaboration space necessary for the development and production of innovative devices and services to local small and medium-sized venture companies, and it will also support the full cycle of product development, from planning to development to commercialization.
In addition, it will support the development and demonstration of public convergence devices for solving various social problems with ICT technology in connection with governmental ministries and local governments, and also create a global business environment by operating joint-corporate booths at domestic and international ICT exhibitions and helping local companies attract investment.
In addition, in cooperation with Gyeonggi-do Business and Science Accelerator, Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA), and Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), the Digital Open Lab create new digital convergence industries and foster global enterprises through the development of an online support platform development, support for ICT convergence quality certification, customized consulting for companies, and the establishment of a new technology council based on the cooperation of government ministries, local governments, and the private sector.
Additionally, in connection with the previously established Daegu 5G Open Test Lab, various 5G convergence services can also be developed and tested in a 5G network environment, allowing customized support for companies that wish to pioneer new 5G industry markets.
Hong Eui-rak, Daegu's Vice Mayor for Economic Affairs remarked, “Today, the emergence of products and services, where new technologies such as artificial intelligence and 5G are applied to the entire industry and society, is accelerating.” He added, “We will not spare any effort to support the development of products as well as the creation and growth of new markets.”
