Donghwasa Temple is the biggest temple in Palgongsan Mountain, with a 1,500-year-old history. It offers temple stay programs during which you can spend a day like a Korean Buddhist monk doing a Korean tea ceremony, Balwoogongyang, and more. The programs will give you a chance to learn about Buddhism, Korean traditional culture, and help you find your inner peace.
Even though this temple is far away from the downtown, it’s easy to get to Donghwasa. If fact, there is a bus that will take you straight there. Near the temple, there are accommodations, restaurants and lots of funny things such as a cable car, drive-in theater, and Daegu Safe Theme Park just to name a few. Best of all, Donghwasa has the temple stay program. The Temple Stay is a Korean cultural program that allows you to experience the life of a Buddhist practitioner at a Korean traditional temple away from the modern, technological world.
In Donghwasa, there’s a huge statue of Buddah, Tongil Yaksa Daebul. It was built in 1992, praying the reunification of Korea. On the way to the statue from the building of the temple, there is a bright tunnel which seems to light up the darkness of our life.
The temples are not the same as we can watch in movies. It takes at least one hour to get there and all you can see is a humble scenery. Instead of splendid marble, you’ll see old wooden floors. There isn’t any shiny stained glass, only door frames where you can see carved, colored flowers and the layers of time. You might expect a chandelier but you’ll be lucky if you could just find candle light. During the temple stay, you won’t even see a tiny piece of meat, let alone a common hamburger and coke. However, once you leave, you’ll look back on your time at the temple as a great experience and cherish the time you spent there.
The Donghwasa temple is a great place to experience all this. However, the journey is not about gaining something; It is about emptying what you have and what it obsesses you with. When you finish, though, you’ll find out that it will fill the emptiness with things that are much more important.
